Soul Asylum is an band formed in the summer of 1981 by Minneapolis high school friends Dan Murphy, Karl Mueller, and Dave Pirner. The band (named Loud Fast Rules up until 1984) quickly became frontrunners of American college rock, following in the tradition of fellow Minnesota bands Hüsker Dü and The Replacements. Landing their first record deal with Twin/Tone in 1984, Soul Asylum recorded a total of four albums for the local label: Say What You Will... The Melismatics' upcoming album "MANIA!" was produced by Jon Auer of The Posies and Big Star, along with Ed Ackerson (Motion City Soundtrack, Golden Smog, The Replacements) and was mixed by John Fields. The LP was mastered at Sterling Sound in NYC by Chris Athens (Coldplay, Beastie Boys, NERD, etc) and features collaborations with Dan Wilson (Adele, Semisonic) and Jon Auer who also lends vocals to several tracks. The band consists of Clayton Hagen (vocals, Gibson), Travis Hetman (vocals electric/acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica, etc.), Alex Dalton (drums), and Kailyn Spencer (violin). Their music is a refreshingly energetic mix of and , incorporating stomping, clapping, and sweet harmonization to their tunes. Their sophomore album, Write A Letter, was released on May 27th, 2008.
