Zoo Animal is a Minneapolis, MN band formed in January of 2008. It started from Holly Hansen’s (vocals, guitar) need for a bassist and drummer to perform her solo material. Long-time friend Tim Abramson obliged to play bass, and Al Swenson, a fellow community college student, agreed to play drums (Justin Korhonen has since become drummer) . As they played more, Holly became unsettled. They were playing material she wrote before the band and she felt a need and excitement to write songs specifically for this band to play, allowing them to pretty much shape their own parts. Minneapolis electronic crusaders, The New Monarchs, have been hibernating almost since their birth in 2005. Starting out as a guitar, bass, and drums quartet, the band soon split for college. However, remaining members Sean Hogan (Vocals, Guitar, Programming, Electronics) and Taylor Nelson (Backing Vocals, Lead Guitar, Programming, Electronics, Piano) continued to write and exchange ideas via email while at their respective schools, then jointly applied the varnish to the tunes between semesters, with a more electronically based outlook.
