The van Gobots were conceived on the fourth of July, 2007 in the back of a minivan. They released their debut EP in September of 2008 and their follow-up full-length record, Guantanamo Beach Party was released in September of 2009. Guantanamo Beach Party spent one month in the CMJ Top 200 with a peak chart position of #128. After the departure of original drummer Keith Lacock, the band downsized from a quartet and reemerged as a trio in 2012, with Nick Geier converting from guitar to drums. From last.fm:

The Small Cities formed in 2007 in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. The band began as a three- piece (Leif, David, and Jimmy), but quickly saw the need to bring others into the fold. They released their self-titled EP in 2008, which cracked the CMJ top 200 and saw the band opening for the likes of The Besnard Lakes and Ladyhawk. Since the release of the EP, they made some new friends, bought new amps, and turned them up. Read more about The Small Cities on Last.fm.
