Daniel & the Lion's songs evoke power in their spareness, similar to Eau Claire indie darling Bon Iver. They play honest Wisconsin folk music. Their music is a mix of dusty folk and falsetto soul. Daniel Pingrey plays marimba and piano, Cody Wheeler plays the drums, Hilary Neesam plays organ and sings harmony, while Jimmie Linville plays guitar and sings melody. The Small Cities formed in 2007 in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. The band began as a three- piece (Leif, David, and Jimmy), but quickly saw the need to bring others into the fold. They released their self-titled EP in 2008, which cracked the CMJ top 200 and saw the band opening for the likes of The Besnard Lakes and Ladyhawk.
